RRB-wise Total Vacancies

Notably, Kolkata has the highest number of openings with 457 vacancies, followed by Mumbai with 411 and Chennai with 362. Furthermore, Guwahati (329) and Prayagraj (340) also offer substantial opportunities. Additionally, Muzaffarpur has the lowest share with just 17 posts, so candidates applying there should expect intense competition.

RRB JE 04/2026 Eligibility Criteria

Essentially, candidates must satisfy three key conditions to apply — educational qualification, age limit, and citizenship. Moreover, applications from ineligible candidates are rejected outright at the document verification stage. Therefore, it is vital to confirm eligibility before spending time and money on the form.

Educational Qualification

Specifically, for all Junior Engineer categories, a three-year Diploma in Engineering in the discipline mapped to the post is required. Additionally, higher qualifications such as B.E. or B.Tech in the same discipline are also acceptable. Notably, for the Depot Material Superintendent post, a diploma in any engineering discipline is sufficient, with B.E./B.Tech again acceptable.

Exam Group / Discipline Mapping

Consequently, a candidate possessing more than one qualifying diploma mapped to different Exam Groups must select only one Exam Group. Furthermore, DMS candidates whose diploma discipline does not appear in the chart must choose one of the listed Exam Groups at the time of registration. Additionally, those awaiting final results are not eligible to apply.

Age Limit

Basically, the age limit for all candidates is 18 to 33 years, calculated as on 01 January 2027. Moreover, the upper age ceiling differs by community, so candidates must verify their category-specific dates carefully.

Age Relaxation

Additionally, serving Group C/erstwhile Group D Railway staff, Quasi-Administrative office staff, and widowed/divorced/judicially separated women candidates receive further relaxation as per Para 5.2 of the official CEN. Nevertheless, relaxations are not cumulative; a candidate eligible under multiple grounds gets only the maximum applicable relaxation.

Additionally, SC/ST candidates seeking a free travel pass must upload their community certificate in PDF format (under 400 KB) during the application itself.

RRB JE 04/2026 Selection Process

Generally, the selection for RRB JE and DMS posts is conducted in four stages. Moreover, candidates must clear each stage successively to move ahead. Additionally, final empanelment is based on merit obtained in the 2nd Stage CBT along with document verification and medical fitness.

1st Stage CBT (Common Screening)

Specifically, this is a common test for all candidates with 100 questions and 100 marks. Consequently, its normalized score is used only to shortlist candidates to the 2nd Stage CBT at 15 times the community-wise vacancy for each RRB.

Additionally, the duration is 90 minutes (120 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates). Notably, 1/3rd mark is deducted for every wrong answer.

2nd Stage CBT (Discipline-Specific)

Moreover, the second stage tests technical abilities along with general subjects. Specifically, the test comprises 150 questions for 150 marks, conducted over 120 minutes (160 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates). Furthermore, a virtual calculator is provided on screen.

Therefore, technical abilities carry the highest weightage with 100 marks out of 150, so candidates should prioritize the discipline-specific syllabus. Additionally, the general sections of 50 marks must not be ignored, since they are relatively easy to score.

RRB JE Recruitment 2026 Qualifying & Final Stages

Furthermore, the minimum qualifying marks are UR & EWS 40%, OBC-NCL & SC 30%, and ST 25%. Additionally, these are relaxable by up to 2 marks for PwBD candidates in case of a shortage against reserved vacancies. Consequently, candidates who qualify proceed to Document Verification, where the number of candidates called equals the number of vacancies.
